Afrobarometer

Afrobarometer, a nonprofit corporation with headquarters in Ghana, is a pan-African, non-partisan survey research network that provides reliable data on African experiences and evaluations of democracy, governance, and quality of life.

Guided by a vision of a world in which Africa’s development is anchored in the realities and aspirations of its people, Afrobarometer works to make citizen voice a key pillar of Africa policy and decision making.

Afrobarometer’s national partners in about 40 countries conduct face-to-face interviews in the language of the respondent’s choice with nationally representative samples. Regional coordination is provided by the Ghana Center for Democratic Development, the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation in South Africa, and the Institute for Development Studies at the University of Nairobi in Kenya. Michigan State University, the University of Cape Town, and the University of Malawi provide technical support to the network.

In addition to collecting and analysing data and disseminating its findings, Afrobarometer works to build the capacities of the next generation of African researchers.

Afrobarometer data inform many global indices, including the Ibrahim Index of African Governance, Transparency International’s Global Corruption Barometer, and the World Bank’s Worldwide Governance Indicators. Its data are also used for country risk analyses and by credit rating and forecasting agencies such as the Economist Intelligence Unit. All Afrobarometer data sets are publicly available on its website and may be analysed free of charge using its online data analysis tool.
