Retraction policy

The Roper Center for Public Opinion Research (“Roper Center”) strives to ensure that the data and materials in the archive represent the good-faith efforts of researchers and that the methodologies used in its collection have been accurately described by the submitting organization(s) or principal investigator(s) (“PI”).

Nevertheless, inaccuracies may be present in the data or materials contained within the archive. In cases where Roper Center is made aware of inaccuracies, some issues may be corrected in coordination with the submitting organization(s) or PI(s) and may not require retraction.

Roper Center reserves the right to retract a publication if it includes significant errors, irregularities in the data or materials, or any form of misrepresentations (e.g., fraud, identity theft, or fictitious authorship) that cannot be resolved with a corrected version of the dataset or materials. Further, publications may be considered for retraction if the findings have been published elsewhere without proper attribution, permission, or justification, or material or data have been used without proper authorization. Roper Center recognizes that errors may be inadvertent and the purpose of the retraction is to correct the publication and ensure its integrity, not punish the submitting organizations or PIs.

In cases where Roper Center needs to retract a publication from the archive, the submitting organization or PI will be notified. The publication record will remain visible at the digital object identifier (“DOI”) provided by Roper Center, and a retraction notification will be promptly posted at that location.

Submitting organization(s) or PI(s) may choose to request retraction of their own publications by emailing data-services@ropercenter.org. Other researchers may request review of suspected errors, irregularities, or misrepresentations. Requests will be reviewed in conjunction with Committee on Publication Ethics (“COPE”) guidance, Roper Center policies, and other relevant information. The requesting party will be notified of Roper Center’s decision.

Roper Center does not seek or require author approval for retractions, and the decision to retract will be reconsidered only in light of substantial new information. Appeals may be submitted to data-services@ropercenter.org and will be reviewed by Roper Center staff, advisors, and/or Roper Center’s Board of Directors, and its decisions are final.
