The Roper Center for Public Opinion Research, the world’s largest archive of public opinion data, welcomes three new members to its Board of Directors: Mark Hugo Lopez, the director of Hispanic research at Pew Research Center; Kelly Musick, a professor in the Department of Policy Analysis and Management at Cornell University and director of the Cornell Population Center; and Jonathon Schuldt, an assistant professor in the Department of Communication at Cornell University.
Mark Hugo Lopez studies the attitudes and opinions of Latinos, Hispanic views of identity, and the political engagement of Latinos in the nation’s elections. He coordinates Pew Research Center’s annual National Survey of Latinos and authors frequent reports about immigration, the Hispanic electorate, and Hispanic identity. Lopez, who frequently appears in national and international media, was research director of the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) as well as a research assistant professor at the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland.
Director of the Cornell Population Center and Professor of Policy Analysis and Management, Kelly Musick studies changing family patterns and social inequality, relying on surveys such as the American Time Use Survey, the National Survey of Family Growth, and the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. She teaches courses in family demography and research methods, and her research has been supported by various funding agencies, including the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the Russell Sage Foundation, and the Swedish Research Council.
Jonathon Schuldt, who holds a bachelor’s degree from Cornell and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, studies everyday judgment and decision-making, with a special expertise in message framing and issue labeling. His recent work examines the intersection of race, ethnicity, and political identity in the context of public opinion on environmental issues.
Since its inception 70 years ago, the Roper Center has focused on surveys conducted by the news media, nonprofit organizations, academic survey research centers, and commercial polling firms, serving as a resource to improve the practice of survey research and broadening the understanding of public opinion. Located at Cornell University, the Center’s Board of Directors includes representatives from across multiple sectors in public opinion research.
